How do I become an equine vet tech?

I want to be an equine vet tech but I don't know where to start. I've taken many hard science classes in high school and I am taking equine science as a class. My mother wants me to go straight into the pre vet program at the local college but it only gets you 60 credit hours and seems to just focus on small animal where as the UT vet school requires that you get 66. The MTSU equine science program gives you 66 hours and the classes you take line up exactly with the needed classes for the UT vet school. Should I go into the mtsu equine science program if I want to be an equine vet tech or is that the completely wrong direction? As you can see I really need some help.
